  1. We, the Hikkaduwa Verein e.V. of Salem, Germany and his members are deeply saddened about the demise of Father Raja. Please accept our most heartfelt sorrow and condolences.
We are honored and blessed to have known Father Raja as such a great and very special person. It was late Sister Dorothy Affleck who in early 2005, less than two weeks after the tsunami, introduced us to Father Raja in Kalegana and we traveled to Matara together to visit the highly tsunami-affected St. Mary´s Convent there. Since that time, Father Raja has become a true and honorable friend who was a trustworthy middleman between our Hikkaduwa Verein and our childcare projects in Sri Lanka. Together with Father Raja, we arranged many scholarships after the tsunami for needy cases who still receive support today; together with Father Raja, we laid the corner stone of the new St. Mary´s Primary School on Browns Hill in Matara; not least due to Father Raja´s untiring commitment we succeeded in raising funds for the new school from more than 800 donors; and together with Father Raja, we had the pleasure of inaugurating the new Primary School in January 2008. We have been in permanent fruitful contact with Father Raja since then who only days ago informed us about his plans to meet us in June here in Germany on his way to the USA. We are shocked that his plans came to such an abrupt end but we assure you that he will be truly missed and always kept in our memory.
    Sincerely and cordially,

    Horst Gerland
with all members and friends of the Hikkaduwa Verein e.V.
